Ozone alert issued for Long Island due to air pollution

Ozone alerts have been created to not only warn individuals of dangerous levels of air pollution, but encourage people to think green as well.

Recently, an ozone alert was issued for Long Island, New York, after the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and State Department of Health determined that air pollution levels were hazardous. Individuals who exercise outdoors, small children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions are all at risk of health complications during an alert, according to the Long Island Press.

During an alert, local residents are encouraged to carpool or use mass transit systems to reduce the overall amount of air pollution in the region. Conserving fuel and reducing exhaust can also help.

Individuals who live with respiratory illnesses or just want to breathe easier can purchase an air purifier for their homes.
